slYder - Wordpress Slider Demonstration
Thank you for your interest in slYder, on this page you can learn everything there is to know about how to use the Plugin.
You can see a live demo of this plugin in action Live On the Homepage of this site
Quick Video Demonstration
The first thing you need to do is figure out where you want to place it. If you are a theme programmer you will probably be most comfortable with the template tag:
Template Tag: <?php slYder(); ?>
You can place the template tag anywhere within your theme.
You can also use the shortcode if you are unfamiliar with template tags, or if your are using a WordPress Frontpage Template
Shortcode: [slYder]
The default CSS styles of the plugin are percentage based so it should look ok on most themes, however if you want to customize it further you can click on the slYder link on the left hand side of your WordPress dashboard, there you can customize every aspect of the look and feel of the Slider.
If you know CSS you can also style the slider fairly easily (some aspects might require the !important over-ride).
Image Management:
When you add in a post, wordpress allows you to upload images into a specific gallery for that post, after you upload the images there is a link for gallery, adjust your images like the screenshot below to customize banner and thumbnail images.
If this is confusing, watch the video
Template Tag Variables:
If you want multiple sliders for different pages and you want to change the appearance per page you can also pass in parameters to the template like so.
<?php slYder(‘shellWidth=800&bannerWidth=750′); ?>
Here is a list of all of the parameters you can adjust:
Note: Every variable is a number in pixels or % unless otherwise specified
shellWidth – width of outer border
shellHeight – height of outer border
thumbWidth – the width of the thumbnail
thumbHeight – the height of the thumbnail
bannerWidth
bannerHeight
titleWidth – The background for the title
titleHeight
excerptWords – # of words (length) of the excerpt
slYder_posts – # of posts to cycle through
slYder_cat – id # of categories to show, can be comma seperated (e.g. 3, 4, 8 ) and can also be set to exclude categories (e.g. -3, -4)
slYder_top – offset the title from the top of the banner
slYder_right – offset the title from the right of the banner a certain amount of pixels

Hi, there’s been a couple of people that have had this error, can you give me an idea of which server setup you have?
Like is it Windows or Linux, Shared Hosting? Which version of PHP?
Thanks

Also can you check if this happens on a clean install of wordpress? I need to know if it’s a server issue or something different.

Actually I think I just fixed the header errors, can you please confirm if they are fixed or not? Thanks!

Just to let you know that there is some sort of glitch in the plugin. I activated it (but didn’t even insert the text into my theme editor) and the next time I tried to log into my WordPress it gave me multiple error messages related to your plugin and then blocked me from going in. Luckily I was already logged in on another open page or I would have been completely locked out of my site. Not sure how this could have happened before I even inserted any code but just letting you know so that someone else doesn’t use it and get locked out of their WordPress.

What were the error messages you were getting? Also BTW if that ever happens again you can delete the plugin files directly via FTP in order to get back into your site.

Very nice! Is it possible to show posts from a custom type? It will be perfect…
Thanks for your efforts, great plugin.

So you mean filter by custom post type? Do the custom post types show up in the slider already?
Reply
I guess what I mean is, do the Custom Post Types show up in the slider if you don’t make any changes to the categories?
Reply
Is it possible to show a custom type instead of category ID? Thanks in advance, great plugin!

Hello,
I am using linux and it is and using php 5.2.17 and everything is hosted on dedicated server.
Thanks

Also is there anyway you can figure out if this happens on a clean install of wordpress? (So I can narrow it down if it is a server issue or a PHP issue)

Hi Jordash,
It is a clean install of of wordpress, with a few plugins and a custom theme.
This actually should be fixed now. Let me know if not.
Reply
@Jordash by any chance did you upgrade the software so I can download it, because I see you mentioned “fixed now”.
Hey Fareed, I just updated the plugin to the wordpress database, might take an hour or two too fully propagate. When you see version 1.1 in the changelog you’ll know it’s ready.
Let me know if you encounter any other bugs with the new version and I can email you updated plugin files directly.
Hi Jordash,
I got the update, everything is smooth and works fine now, except one little problem the small images on the left side is not showing up they are blank, but the big one is showing all the featured images. How can I fix this issue?
Thanks for everything
Did you upload at least 2 separate images to the post? 1 Image is used as the thumbnail and one is used as the Big featured image, this is for more control over the thumbnail quality (cause scaling down a huge image doesn’t look so good.)
I did upload 2 pictures, but it made a mistake, the picture that I choose for featured on the right side of wp is showing as small picture and the picture that I choose for content is showing as featured. I thought the picture that I choose for feature on the right side will show as the big picture. Correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks
Do you have a link to the site? It’s the first image in your post gallery as the featured image and the second image is the thumbnail image.
Thanks Jordash,
I found the problem, it was my error, when I was choosing the pictures, it works great now.
Thanks again
Awesome, glad to hear it!
Are you aware the background link of the main images the_permalink() does not seem to update on slide transitions? The links in homeHeroTitle seem to work and update as the slides change but the big BG images a href in homeHeroTitleBG always point to the latest post irregardless of what slide it’s actually on. Is it just me or is this something obvious you missed? Let me know, overall decent little plugin though. I’m taking a peak at the code but it’s pretty messy, so maybe you confirm or deny this before I waste my time. Thanks.

Actually scratch that the bug is even present on the demo on your own site so clearly it’s not just me. So there you go, heads up on a bug.

Thanks Bob, I didn’t notice that. The problem should be fixed now. The title link was pointing to the right place but the background image wasn’t like you mentioned.
Oh and I just released an update that should fix that.
Thanks
Hello Jordash,
I had a question regarding the main page. What I want to do is customize the slyder so that I can use 7 images to slide in the main page for ever and add no more featured images or allow anyone else to do the same. If I create a post and upload those images, and later an editor uploads others images, it will defeat my purpose, because the images will change. Is there a way, to allow only admin to add featured images not everyone?
Thanks
Fareed

I see what you’re saying, i’ll look into it.

Hello,
is it possible to have the option to insert only one image in posts? WordPress generates thumbnails for every image by itself, isn’t it? Why slyder can’t take small image from there?
Thank you,
Francesco

Or alternatively is possibile to have thumbnails disabled?
Reply
What is the problem with having thumbnails generated for every image? Is it cosmetic? That’s based on the theme.

No, the thing is on my site write persons not so skilled about wordpress and web in general: ask them to insert one image is quite difficult, two in a defined order is impossible.
However yours is still a great job.
Thanks.
